If you’re looking to start or continue your nursing career, don’t forget to use all the resources available to you.

In order to enter nursing school, you need a high school diploma. Use your high school guidance counselor to find out about prospective nursing programs, or use a practicing nurse. Nurses are usually caring kind people, and many know the struggles it takes to make it into nursing, so they’d be willing to share their knowledge and experiences with prospective nurses.

Entry level nursing degrees include

Bachelor of Science Nursing – a four year program offered at colleges and universities that prepare nurses to practice across all health care settings. These graduates have the greatest opportunities for advancement. Positions include nurse specialist, nurse practitioner, nurse educator, or nurse researcher.

Associate’s Degree – a two-to-three year program offered at junior and community colleges that prepares nurses to provide direct patient care in numerous settings. It is an affordable education that gets many beginner nurses started off. Some hospital nursing schools, colleges, and universities also offer ADN programs.

Hospital Diploma – a two-to-three year program based in hospitals that prepares you to deliver direct patient care. Many diploma schools team up with junior or community colleges where you can take the basic science and English requirements, thereby earning your Associate’s degree along with your diploma in nursing.

These are just a few of the nursing options available to you. Be sure to also look up financial aid options and licensure requirements, since these can vary from state to state.
